The Narmada Main Canal is 458 km Long. The Main Canal passes through 9 districts and 27 talukas of Gujarat. These districts are Narmada, Panchmahal, Vadodara, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Patan and Banaskantha.
The works of Narmada Main Canal from Kevadia to Mahi River (0 km. to 144 Km.) were commenced in 1980 and they were completed by the year 2000. In this reach of the Main Canal there are 15 branch canals having total length of 657 Km. All these branch canals has been completed.
The Narmada Main Canal between 144 Km. (Mahi River) to 263 Km. (off take of Saurashtra Branch Canal) is also completed in the year 2003 and is operational. There are 7 branches having total length of 217 km. in this portion of the Main Canal. All the 7 branches has been completed.
The Saurashtra Branch Canal off takes from 263 km. (near Kadi) of the Main Canal. The SBC is 104 km. long and the works in initial 80 km. is completed and remaining works are in progress. There are 7 sub-branches off taking from the Saurashtra Branch Canal which has total length of 865 km. Of this Narsingpura, Malia and Vallabhipur sub-branch has been completed and works in Dhranghdra, Limbadi, Botad and Morbi are in progress. The Saurashtra Branch Canal is having 5 pumping stations which has lift varying from 10.86 mt. to 17.03 mt. This is one of the largest pumping station of the Asia and work has been completed for the first pumping station near Vilapur. The first pumping station has pumping capacity of 300 cubic meter per second and has a lift of 10.86 mt. The work of remaining 5 pumping stations is in progress.
The Main Canal from 263 km. (Kadi) to 458 Km. (Gujarat Rajasthan border) is also operational and water is reached to Rajasthan in March-2008. There are 15 branch canals in this portion of the Main Canal. Of these 15 branch canals one branch canal is completed whereas works of remaining 9 branch canals are in progress whereas works of 5 branch canals would be taken up.
